The Museum is located in an old fishing house, built in 1767, in the so-called “Achterreeg” (second line of houses). On an area of 220 qm, the visitor is informed by exhibits on the history of fishery, of seafaring, of pilotage and sea rescue in Warnemünde. The development of Warnemünde from a fishing village to the today seaside resort is shown. History of the History Museum
On 12 February 1914, the “Low German Association” suggested the compiling of all things important in history and culture of Warnemünde. In 1933, the old Warnemünde inhabitant Christine Jungmann has given her house to the city of Rostock as a present. Since then, the old fishing house located in the Alexandrinenstrasse 31 is domicile of the History Museum.
The first “Museum Society” of Warnemünde was founded in 1933 at the suggestion of the “Low German Association” and had already 75 members in May 1933. On 1 July 1933, the opening celebration of the History Museum took place. After World War 2. the History Museum was joined to the Museum of the city of Rostock and was a independent part of the city museums since 1994. Based on the decision of the town parliament of Rostock to look for other responsibilities, the “Museumsverein Warnemünde e.V.” runs the History Museum since 1 January 2005.
